Driver shortage? Pay shortage? Or, maybe gas and oil prices are the cause of the transportation industry’s woes!
Driver shortage or pay shortage? I’m voting pay shortage. You all know the debate: the media constantly reports that the transportation industry is suffering from a driver shortage; we know the truth. There are plenty of drivers, but exactly how does the transportation industry expect us to make a living on low wages? Particularly with the economy in a meltdown and gasoline and oil prices so ridiculously high? There are plenty of drivers; we just can’t afford to drive our trucks!
It seems that the sexual harassment suits against CRST Van Expedited just never end. They lose, then contest and win, more suits are brought… it just goes on and on.
The latest development in the newest long-running driver harassment case against CRST Van Expedited is that the 15 drivers who were being called as witnesses won’t be allowed to testify. So the 15 women who came forward to speak out that their driver trainers had sexually harassed them are now being told that they are not allowed to speak not only by the company that allegedly refused to respond to their complaints, but also now by the court that’s trying the case.
Lots of drivers feel undervalued at their companies, but here’s a guy who’s sure to get a nice bonus at the end of the year. You may be a safe driver, but would you risk your life by jumping into a burning vehicle to save it and other trucks parked in a company lot? Well that’s exactly what Lance Corbett did.
According to authorities, a truck belonging to Joel Olson Trucking, Inc burst into flames at their Longview, WA location. It was sitting in the yard next to a long line of other parked trucks. The fire immediately spread to the truck next to it. That’s when Corbett jumped into the drivers’ seat of the second truck and pulled it forward so that the fire wouldn’t spread to the other trucks nearby.
Now, under pressure from Congress and the courts, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is trying to reinvigorate the regulatory process by asking its Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee for suggestions on how to get the job done.
The ATA has just published a paper titled “Truck Driver Shortage Update” written by Bob Costello, Chief Economist and Vice President for the ATA which you can see here. While I’m sure Bob is a very nice person who is doing his best with the information provided to him, anyone who is familiar with the industry will see more than a few anomalies in the report.
Truck driver Jason Harte of Rogers, Ark., has been named a Truckload Carriers Association Highway Angel for freeing children trapped in a minivan after a severe crash.
Although very few fleets are expecting a shortage of freight to haul, lack of drivers, higher fuel and insurance costs appear to be dampening carriers’ enthusiasm to buy new power units in the near future, according to CK Commercial Vehicle Research’s Q2 2012 Fleet Sentiment Report.

The Driver Fitness BASIC factsheet focuses on drivers and their operation of commercial motor vehicles, including their driving, training, and medical qualifications, as outlined under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) Parts 383 and 391. Motor carriers and drivers can refer to this factsheet for additional information regarding what documents associated with this BASIC to keep in the event of a safety investigation, such as annual reviews of driving records, and how to proactively address driver fitness-related problems.
