Trucking Industry Transports Record Number of Wreaths to Veterans’ Cemeteries

veterans remberence wreaths trucking industryLast week, 65 trucking companies hauled 126 loads of fresh remembrance wreaths (about 610,000 in all) to be laid on graves at more than 800 veterans’ cemeteries across the nation. Each cemetery conducted its own special events and wreath-laying ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 15, as part of Wreaths Across America Day, held annually each December.

Trucking companies have donated manpower and equipment to Wreaths Across America, an organization that coordinates veteran services and recognition through a variety of programs, and provides schools with teaching aides for projects throughout the year.

Of the many wreaths that traveled the country, 34 truckloads (representing about 110,000 wreaths – 20,000 more than last year), headed to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., the final resting place for hundreds of thousands of veterans.

We’re not the only industry facing a recruiting and training crisis

Pilots in cockpit of commercial airplaneIt’s a job once viewed as glamorous, but these days, not so much. It involves a lot of time away from home. And it takes a lot of time and money to get the needed training to get a license and a job — but the pay’s not all that great.

Sound familiar? I could easily be talking about trucking, but in this case, I’m referring to an article in the Wall Street Journal about the “pilot crisis.”

I was struck by the similarities between trucking’s driver shortage and the airlines’ pilot crisis.

Government Help?

Last week, the paper reports, more than a dozen major airlines and commuter carriers participated in a meeting to discuss potential solutionsdubbed the “Pilot Supply Summit.”

ATA’s Annual Trends Report Reflects Recovering Trucking Industry
